The Biography Of Mike Thurston
A brief summary of Mike's teen years and how he has progressed from working a miserable, uninspiring job, to pursuing his passion, living his dream and loving life.
I was born and raised in Leeds, United Kingdom, until the age of 18. Throughout my life I have always been active, playing football, rugby, basketball, golf, athletics, swimming, you name it, I probably did it. During the autumn and winter months rugby was my sport of choice, playing for Leeds Grammar School 1st team and a local club West Park Bramhope. After finishing secondary school, I moved to Newcastle Upon Tyne to study Economics and Business Management at Newcastle University.
Many of my fellow team mates continued to play rugby at university, however my interest was elsewhere. I had only ever been in a gym a handful of times before the age of 18. Due to the demanding rugby training I followed, I either didn't have the time or the energy to get to the gym. Now that I was at university and said goodbye to my rugby career, I was now able to dedicate my full time to it and try something new.
In the beginning I never believed anything would ever come from pursuing my passion. I went to the gym during university purely for the love of it. I had never had a hobby like it before. There was something about the feeling of lifting weights and seeing yourself make progress that was addictive. Back in my early years of lifting there was no such thing as Snapchat or Instagram, the term selfie didn't even exist, and taking photos in the gym was unheard of. I never pursued this lifestyle for the social media fame, I did it purely for the love and satisfaction of challenging myself and seeing how grew as a person.
When I graduated from University in 2011 I spent the summer abroad in Marbella, Spain working in the club promotion industry. I returned to Newcastle to continue working in club promotions until I was recruited by Hollister (the Abercrombie & Fitch sister company) on the post-graduate manager in training scheme.
After a year of working in retail, I became all to familiar with it’s repetitive nature and its less than ideal working hours. I was forced to cut back on pursuing my real passion, bodybuilding. I knew that was where my future lay. I remember walking around the shop floor, daydreaming about what I could be doing, visualising a future I wanted to build for myself. At the age of 22 it was clear that you truly have to do what you enjoy in life. I knew that something relating to health and fitness would be my future career path.
In February 2013 I completed a personal training course with Premier Training In March and received my level 2 and 3 personal training certification. It was then I took the huge risk of quitting my job and starting a new chapter in my life.
Shortly following the move I joined forces with my old university friend to found the Newcastle based health and fitness company Aurora Athletic. Myself and Kyle Patterson opened a private studio near the city centre where we based our 1 on 1 and online training operations. It was here I spent 3 years mastering and perfecting my craft, gaining thousands of hours worth of experience within the field of personal training. During this time I competed at the WBFF shows in London during the summer of 2014 and 2015 where I managed to place 3rd in the muscle model category. Shortly after that I signed a deal with two (current) sponsors, the world famous supplement brand EHPLabs and the newly formed clothing brand RIPT. Both are a pleasure to work alongside and I am truly appreciative of the supported they have given me.
In October 2016 I made the difficult decision to part with my company and business partner in order to pursue different goals. At the present time I am completely focusing on becoming one of the worlds best online coaches, along with exploring what exciting opportunities London has to offer.
